Custom apparel-Wedding dress

Like most brides, I was very excited to find the perfect wedding dress. And like most brides, I obsessed over finding the dress that was a perfect expression of "me" or really "red carpet celebrity" version of me.

But going to the bridal salons, I feel like a star shape peg trying to fit into a square hole.
I rebel against the square hole with a unique flair and it seemed impossible to find the dress that represented my style. I was desperately trying to find a wedding dress was both beautiful and unusual.

Then wedding fate struck during a visit form Emily Horton. Emily, Jeff, & I were friends during college where Emily studied theater costume design. After a successful career on the theater circuit, Emily had moved back to Portland to launch her own clothing designs & sewing business. Thank the wedding gods that Emily took me on as her client and I am going to have a "one-of-a-kind designed for just for me" wedding gown!

It has been an amazing creative process! And the dress has turned out beyond my dreams!
Here are a few samples of inspiration pictures I sent Emily to help shape the dress design.

Custom apparel-Synthi Ties

Here is a sneak peak of the groom's party ties. They are so techno! Custom silk screened by a Detroit artist, the Synthi design has special meaning for Jeff and represents his passion for audio gear and fat beats. Not to mention the black and silver color combo should look super fab with my dress!

I love all of Bethany's designs and it felt like "wedding fate" when I discovered her store. She is a designer on her way to big things! A couple weeks ago she was even featured in the Sunday NY Times.

Check out some more the cool designs!

Venue: It’s a beautiful night for a moon dance!

8:30 sunset should be just in time for the toasts! The first dance should be about 9:00. It should be a beautiful night for a moon dance with the dance floor out underneath the city skyline and the northwest moon.

Wedding Production weekend

The wedding is so close! Down the final stretch of planning the final details. I have a complicated web of spreadsheets to consult, flowers to finalize, grooms shirts to find, lighting for the tent & dance floor to figure out...ooowww.... the list is long. Jeff said its time to work on the wedding for 12 hours straight. WOW! No joke.

From the collection of love notes from Jeff

"Also, I saw a dress in a storefront in Belltown on First Ave that just screamed you. Sexy little black number. I'll have to take you to try it on.

Love you and can't stop thinking about you. Good luck today!"

Flash Back to the year 2000

I Love RSVP cards!

I never realized how much fun it is to get daily gobs of cards in the mail! The RSVP cards are already flowing in and Jeff & I race to the mail box after work to check out the new arrivals. Thanks so much for all your responses!

If you have not sent your RSVP card back to me yet you should decorate your return envelope with doodles or stickers. That would be the best mail day ever!

Wedding Rituals-The Processional

Outwardly you walk down the isle with family and friends looking on, a passage of only a few minutes. But inwardly you are undertaking a much longer journey, enacting a transition from one way of life to another.

By the time you take your place, you will feel as if you have taken a very long journey. You have walked through the entire length of your relationship, from courtship to the commitment that has brought you to this moment.

My wedding paper doll obsession

Planning and designing the wedding celebration has been an incredible experience for me. It turns out that I really like daydreaming about a lot things that weddings entail like high fashion dresses, sparkling details, exotic flowers, flaming candles, yummy cocktails, and kissing my man dolled up in a suit.

Early in the engagement I became obsessed with paging through wedding magazines dog-earring everything from gowns to dance flower lighting. But the details seemed so trapped on the one-dimensional page and I began cutting them out of magazines and mounting each wedding treasure on crafting foam. I them layered them to huge photos of the venue so I could accurately evaluate how each theme and detail could fit together. I then mounted the all the panels onto the walls creating a "rainbow wedding collage mural" across the house! There are so many beautiful and romantic themes and designs out there and it is incredibly hard to commit to just one design that will represent this incredible experience!

Maybe you will recognize some of the "paper doll mural inspiration" in the final design of the wedding!

Jeff's engagement story

The journey to my marriage proposal to Sarah was a long one, but we finally got there. It began with one leap of faith after college to leave St. Louis and move to Seattle without ever seeing the city before. After this we spent many years figuring ourselves out, figuring out our career paths, and supporting one another through many challenges. While our relationship was typically strong and we always considered ourselves a small family complete with two dogs, the challenge of living in an expensive city far away from our family and friends was overwhelming at times. Eventually we began finding our way and we felt like we were at home here. While we were committed to each other all along, several years later I finally realized it was time to make that commitment permanent.

I began to secretly start shopping for engagement rings, trying my hardest for Sarah not to know what was going on. It was a bit of a nerve-racking experience going into the ring store at first, not really knowing what to do. But my nervous feelings quickly changed to excitement. After picking out the ring, I told Sarah that we needed a real vacation.

After some research I told her that we should take a beach vacation in Laguna Beach, CA in March of 2007. I kept wondering if Sarah knew what was going on. I think she had a hope that this would be when we would get engaged, but I wasn't quite sure. Picking up the ring, hiding it a few days in the house, and then hiding in my carry-on at the airport was another nerve-racking experience. I still wasn't quite sure what I was going to say or where exactly I was going to do this. And then I kept thinking she would discover the ring accidentally before I proposed.

After we arrived we spent a day hanging out in our beautiful room overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Being a bit of an obsessive compulsive person I had to keep secretly checking on the ring, making sure I didn't lose it, and making sure she didn't discover it. It was an interesting feeling trying to hang on to this secret for several days. I just kept wanting to tell her what was up my sleeve, but luckily I was able to keep it to myself. I managed to scope out a really cool rock formation with a natural archway in a secluded area a hundred yards down the beach or so. Finally, on the second night in California we went out to eat, and afterwards I told her we should grab a bottle of wine and a blanket and take a walk on the beach. I pointed out the rock formation and we walked down to it and through the archway, which I suddenly realized was a metaphor for what was about to happen. Just beyond the archway we laid out our blanket and made a toast.

I remember she had a sparkly “Sarah-style” beach dress on. I told her I had a question for her. At that point I knelt down on one knee and asked her to marry me. She was shaking with so much excitement. And thankfully, the girl that I fell so deeply in love with so many years prior back in St. Louis said “Yes!”...

Pier 66, an unforgettable Pacific Northwest venue

Located on the waterfront in Seattle, Washington, Bell Harbor rooftop garden is a special event space featuring 180-degree panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains, Mt. Rainier, Puget Sound’s Elliott Bay and the Seattle skyline.

Bell Harbor is minutes from downtown Seattle’s Pike Place Market and shopping corridor.

With the skyline as a backdrop the ceremony will be seated in the open air and the reception dinner will be hosted under a tent on the roof top.

Two months and counting!

The count down to wedding day passed another milestone on Tuesday. 2 MONTHS!!!
The invitations have been officially mailed today and we passed the post office weigh in!

The design of the invites is a little bit on the wild side. But I am sure this will not surprise you! We approached the design to reflect our festive attitude towards the wedding and to celebrate the incredible venue.

A special thanks to John Ersfeld and the Scanner Graphics crew for printing our invites. John is one my favorite people in my work life. In the crazy business of advertising he is my guardian angel.
